Overview

Dark spots might appear on your skin for a number of reasons. A few of those reasons include post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, age spots, birth marks, freckles, or even melasma due to hormone fluctuations during pregnancy. Regardless of what's causing your dark spots, however, rest assured that you can get rid of them with consistent and diligent treatment. In order to see results, you will need to apply whichever treatment you choose for at least eight weeks.

Step 1

Cleanse your skin twice a day to remove dirt, oil and dead skin cells. Use a mild formulation so as to not irritate your skin. It's best to cleanse when you wake up each morning and right before going to bed each night.

Step 2

Exfoliate your skin with an alcohol-free toner. Soak the toner onto a cotton pad and wipe all of your face, and skin, especially wherever you have dark spots. This will remove dead skin cells and speed up cell turnover, which means your dark spots will fade faster.

Step 3

Moisturize your skin each morning and evening. Use a good amount all over your body to lock in moisture after showering and to keep your skin supple and plump. If your skin is dry, dark spots will look more pronounced.

Step 4

Protect your skin from sun exposure by applying sunscreen each day. Use a formula with at least SPF 15. Dark spots can darken more when exposed to the sun and even worse, new age spots may form.

Step 5

Request a prescription for hydroquinone from your dermatologist. This cream bleaches the skin pigment, leaving your skin whiter. When applied strategically to your dark spots, it can help lighten them to match the rest of your skin. Careful application is essential to prevent skin damage.
