Collagen is a natural protein found in tissues of the human body, most commonly in the skin. Derived from human protein or highly purified cow (bovine), collagen is used as a wrinkle filler. These fillers are injected by a physician into areas most prone to wrinkles: around the mouth, eyes and forehead. The injections are safe if done correctly, but occasionally there are some side effects.

Skin Necrosis

Occasionally the patient will develop skin necrosis, or dead skin. This occurs because the collagen has blocked a blood vessel so blood is not able to reach the needed tissues.

There is no cure for skin necrosis and the skin will not be able to heal. Gangrene can follow if there is a significant loss of blood supply to the tissues.

Uneven Skin Texture

Occasionally the skin will be left with an uneven texture after collagen injections. This is because the collagen has not settled into the underlying tissues correctly. There will be redness caused by the numerous amounts of times the needle has to be injected.

If the collagen injection is done incorrectly, the collagen can move. This movement can cause uneven skin texture and may also cause hard spots. These side effects should clear up in a few days.

Allergic Reactions

Some patients have an allergic reaction to collagen. Physicians usually perform two skin tests before the injections are made to ensure a patient is not allergic to collagen, advises the Mayo Clinic.

Even after a negative skin test, a patient can still have an allergic reaction to collagen injections. Allergic reactions include chest pain, hives, itching and redness at the injection site, and shortness of breath.
