Overview

Collagen is a protein that the body uses to form connective tissue. The molecules of collagen combine to form long, fibrous stands that supply a framework for tendons, cartilage and skin. As skin ages or becomes damaged by the sun, the collagen fibers pull apart or lose elasticity. Science has developed no clear way to stimulate collagen. The best approach involves taking care of your skin to promote normal growth and therefore, collagen replacement.

Step 1

Increase your dietary intake of vitamin A. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, foods rich in vitamin A include beef, liver, eggs, dairy and dark-green leafy vegetables. Vitamin A is an element needed by the body to maintain healthy skin and mucous membranes.

Step 2

Add more vitamin C to your diet. The Mayo Clinic states that studies show a diet rich in vitamin C promotes healthier-looking skin. Since collagen is a component of your skin, taking vitamin C may promote growth of collagen. Eat fruits, vegetables and whole grains to increase your vitamin C intake.

Step 3

Wear a sunscreen to protect your skin. Damaged skin may not produce collagen. Protecting your skin from the harmful effects of the sun will keep skin healthy and promote growth.

Step 4

Drink lots of water, as it is necessary for healthy skin growth. Drink eight 8-oz. glasses of water a day.

Step 5

Use a vitamin A skin cream. These antioxidant wrinkle creams neutralize free radicals on the skin to promote healthy skin and enhance new growth.

Step 6

Apply a hydroxy acid treatment to skin. Hydroxy acid removes the outer layer of dead skin cells to stimulate growth of new skin.
