Overview

For years, people have been searching for the fountain of youth. And while nothing has been found that will actually stop the clock and turn back the years, there have been surprising advances in the field of more youthful looking skin. Much of those advances have surround the topic of collagen, and collagen production. Collagen is a protein our bodies produce naturally. As we age, the amount of collagen produced diminishes. This loss of collagen adds up to less supple skin and the advance of wrinkles.

Step 1

Wear sunscreen. Hopefully, you already use a sunscreen. If not, you should. Sunscreen won't help produce new collagen, but it will protect the collagen you already have. The sun's are not kind to skin, and keeping the rays at bay needs to be the top priority in the search for a more youthful appearance. Never spend time in the sun with anything less than SPF 15.

Step 2

Buy lotion with retinol. There are a million different types of lotion out there. But very few of them have any redeeming qualities other than their ability to soften the skin. Retinol is different. According to the Mayo Clinic, retinol is the first antioxidant to be used in skin creams available without a prescription. Retinol does its work by wiping out free radicals, the very things that break down collagen in the face.

Step 3

Try some vitamin C. According to a study done by Linus Pauling, vitamin C has shown the ability to elevate the body's production of collagen. It make sense when you realize that vitamin is essential in the development of collagen in the first place.

Step 4

Get a collagen implant. Right now, the only FDA approved collagen implant out there is bovine implant. That's according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Bovine collagen is sterilized, purified and then injected under the derma layer of the skin. Once injected the collagen replaces lost collagen, filling the levels of soft tissue underneath and providing a more youthful skin appearance for the recipient.
