Overview

One of the main reasons most people want to increase collagen in the face is to combat aging. This connective tissue provides support to the surface layer of your skin. As you get older, it begins to weaken and dissipate, allowing depressions to develop in the form of lines, wrinkle and folds on the face, explains the Cleveland Clinic. It's for this reason that increasing or supplementing the natural production of collagen can often provide a more youthful appearance to the skin. A number of products and procedures are used for this purpose.

Step 1

Apply a commercial wrinkle cream to problem areas. Creams containing either copper peptides or kinetin can increase the production of collagen. This may help to minimize lines and wrinkles along the face.

Step 2

Increase collagen production with a retinoid. If commercial creams fail to provide results, a retinoid can also be used to increase collagen production. Retinoids are only available by prescription, so talk to your dermatologist about this topical medication.

Step 3

Undergo laser skin resurfacing. This procedure uses laser energy to heat the dermal layer of your skin and thereby stimulate the production of new, healthy collagen. As more and more collagen is produced, the connective tissues can provide a more youthful appearance to the face.

Step 4

Improve skin volume with injectable collagen. By injecting this soft tissue filler directly into lines, wrinkles and folds, they become less visible, advises the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Collagen lasts 2 to 4 months, so follow-up injections are necessary to maintain results.
