Overview

Collagen is the protein in your skin that keeps it feeling firm and smooth. According to licensed esthetician Bethany Ramos, aging and sun damage can compromise collagen, leading to wrinkles. Anti-wrinkle creams containing collagen abound in pharmacies, salons and department stores, but Ramos warns the molecule size of the collagen in these products is too large to be absorbed below the surface of the skin. Eliminating wrinkles may require the use of invasive treatments such as injectable fillers.

Step 1

Try a topical retinoid cream. These products, derived from vitamin A, may partially help eliminate the appearance of wrinkles. If you are using retinol, be particularly careful about sun exposure, as it can increase sensitivity to ultraviolet rays.

Step 2

Use sunscreen every time you go outside, even on cloudy days. Dr. Arnold R. Oppenheim, in an article for Realself.com, also advises avoiding sun from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and wearing sunglasses to protect the delicate skin around the eyes.

Step 3

Add antioxidants such as acai, berries and dark chocolate to your diet. Oppenheim advises using one of the following topical antioxidant treatments as well: CoffeeBerry, Pynogenol, Resveratrol, green tea, Ascorbyl Palmitate vitamin C and Nicomide. Antioxidants protect your skin from damaging free radicals that can break down collagen and cause skin cancer.

Step 4

Refrain from smoking. Not only can cigarettes cause cancer and emphysema, they can dramatically reduce the amount of collagen in your skin.

Step 5

Consult a dermatologist about surgical techniques if you are particularly worried about your wrinkles. These treatments include Botox, dermabrasion, chemical peels and lasers.
