Overview

The lips are a part of the skin, which is the largest organ of the body. Lips do not contain sebaceous glands, which produce sebum. Sebum is a natural oil the skin produces that protects the body and provides moisture; the absence of sebum allows the lips to dry out and become chapped. Chapped lips appear dry and cracked, and infection can develop in the cracks. Chapped lips can be caused by dehydration, prolonged exposure to sun or wind, or certain medications. A natural remedy for chapped lips can restore the moisture to your lips.

Step 1

Apply honey to your lips each morning. Honey will moisturize lips, and it has antibacterial properties that may prevent the cracks in your lips from becoming infected.

Step 2

Apply coconut oil to your lips throughout the day. Coconut oil will help to soothe your chapped lips while also providing moisture to your lips. Place some coconut oil in a small jar with a lid that you can easily carry with you. Use the coconut oil consistently to correct your chapped lips.

Step 3

Drink plenty of water. Increase the amount of water you normally drink while your lips are chapped. Dehydration is a factor in chapped lips, and the more hydrated you are the quicker your lips will be moisturized. Use a humidifier in your home to increase the moisture in the air and improve your hydration.

Step 4

Avoid licking your lips. Saliva leaves your lips drier than before you licked them. Though you will feel the urge to lick your lips when they are dry, do not lick them.
