The Mayo Clinic explains that chapped lips result from a variety of factors, including dehydration, continuously licking your lips, mouth breathing, allergies and overexposure to sun, wind and dry air. Staying hydrated, applying a sunscreen and using a humidifier in your home can help. You may also want to try a homeopathic remedy to heal your chapped lips and prevent the problem in the future.

Olive Oil

Olive oil contains flavonoid polyphenols, which are natural antioxidants. Aside from their ability to remove toxins, flavonoids also encourage healing. The University of Mary Washington recommends rubbing a small amount of olive oil on your chapped lips. Applying olive oil two to three times a day can help relieve the dry, peeling skin on your lips. Continued use will lubricate your lips, making them feel softer and smoother.

Petroleum Jelly

According to the University of Minnesota, petroleum jelly can help to soothe chapped lips. Petroleum jelly is a blend of mineral oil, microcrystalline waxes and paraffin. Because the melting point of petroleum jelly is slightly above body temperature, it adheres to your skin when applied. When you rub petroleum jelly onto your lips, it slips in between the cells on the surface of your skin, forming a protective barrier between your lips and the environment. It also locks moisture inside the skin of your lips, promoting healing.

Rose Water and Glycerin

When combined, rose water and glycerin can heal the peeling skin on your lips and prevent future chapping with regular use. According to The Milliner’s Guide, a homeopathic remedy for chapped lips involves mixing two parts rose water with one part glycerin. Mix the two ingredients in a small bowl and apply the mixture to your lips several times a day. Cover the bowl with a piece of plastic wrap and store it in the refrigerator to form a cooling balm for later use. If you prefer, you can mix a fresh batch each time.
