Nobody wants lip wrinkles, but certain things make them inevitable, such as aging. Doing specific, repetitive movements can cause wrinkles to develop sooner, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Wrinkles are permanent, unless you have certain cosmetic procedures performed such as a face-lift. Causes can vary depending on your habits.

Smoking

Smoking does more than just harm your lungs -- it also causes lip wrinkles. The repetitive motion of puffing on the cigarette or pursing your lips to inhale causes wrinkles. You may begin to notice wrinkles around your lips as early as 10 years after you begin smoking. These wrinkles will develop more quickly the older you get as your facial skin begins to lose elasticity.

Smoking speeds up the aging process of your skin, and it's not limited to just your lips or face. You may begin to notice wrinkles in other areas, such as your inner arms. The nicotine in cigarettes constricts blood vessels near the outermost layer of skin, which reduces the amount of blood flow and oxygen to your skin. Cigarette smoke contains more than 4,000 chemicals, and some of those chemicals breakdown collagen and elastin, which results in premature skin aging. Quitting smoking now will reduce further premature skin aging, wrinkles and damage.

Gravity

The earth's gravity pulls your body toward the center of the earth. This constant pulling eventually affects your skin. Around the age of 50, gravity will really begin to take its toll on your skin, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. The effects will become more dramatic and apparent as you age after 50. The pull of gravity can cause your nose to droop, jaw line to sag, eyes to fall, lips to wrinkle and earlobes to droop.

Unfortunately, there's nothing you can do about gravity. Specific creams, such as retinoids, can help restore your skin's youthfulness and possibly help the aging process. Another alternative would involve cosmetic surgery, which can become very expensive.

Sleep Positions

Sleeping in certain positions, such as with your face buried in the pillow or on your side, can cause facial wrinkles. Those who sleep on their sides may develop wrinkles around the mouth, chin and cheeks because these areas are crumpled up against the pillow.

Wrinkles caused from sleeping in a certain position every night for years are referred to as sleep lines. You can avoid developing sleep lines by sleeping on your back instead of on your side or stomach.
