Overexposure to sun and UV rays can cause brown spots to appear on your skin, particularly if you have an olive-toned or tan complexion. Darker skin contains higher levels of melanin than lighter skin, which makes it more likely to be plagued by brown spots and hyperpigmentation, says Cosmopolitan magazine. To rid yourself of these pesky blotches, use products designed to even out your skin tone, as well as fade or lighten existing brown spots. Always discuss trying new products with a doctor before you begin using them.

Step 1

Wash your face twice a day with a gentle cleanser. Fading creams can be harsh on skin, and using a mild face wash will lessen your chances of irritation.

Step 2

Apply a fading cream that contains hydroquinone, an ingredient that claims to lighten skin. Cosmopolitan suggests DDF Fade Gel 4, which promises to even out your skin tone as well as help fade brown spots, freckles and age spots. Both in the morning and at night, spread a thin layer of the cream on the areas of your face that you wish to lighten.

Step 3

Apply a sunscreen with SPF 15 every morning, says dermatologist Ted Lain, M.D (see source #2). Having a darker complexion does not exempt you from skin damage caused by the sun. Using sunscreen will help keep more brown spots from occurring as well as help fight the other signs of aging. For additional sun protection, Dr. Lain recommends using a sunscreen that also contains antioxidants and vitamins. Cosmopolitan suggests American Beauty Youth-Full Anti-Aging Face Lotion SPF 15, which promises to both brighten your skin and protect it from sun damage.

Step 4

Apply a moisturizer after washing your face and applying the fading cream at night. If you have oily skin, use an oil-free moisturizer that will not clog your pores. If your skin is dry or has an ashy tone to it, opt for a nourishing lotion. Keeping your skin hydrated will help it look healthier and more supple, as well as lessen the dryness that some fading creams might cause.

Step 5

Exfoliate your skin twice per week. Exfoliate after washing and before you apply the fading cream. Exfoliation helps even out your overall skin tone by getting rid of dead skin and pore-clogging buildup, says Dr. Lain. Choose a gentle scrub to avoid excess irritation.
