Overview

Clearasil is a skincare product developed to treat acne breakouts. There was once a time, however, when Clearasil was simply thought of as a topical, spot-on blemish treatment. Now, however, you have a choice of about 12 different products and an ever-growing menu of choices.

Cleansers

Reckitt Benckiser, the company that manufacturers Clearasil, offers a variety of cleansers. Most products in this category contain 2 percent salicylic acid, a chemical that works on non-inflamed lesions, prevents skin cells from shedding too quickly and clogging the pore. Daniel W. Kern of the Acne website reports that salicylic acid also breaks down whiteheads and blackheads, a type of acne that traps sebum, or oil, beneath the surface of the skin. For some, salicylic acid can cause a tingling or burning sensation. If you have overly sensitive skin, Clearasil offers a daily wash that contains no salicylic acid. The StayClear Daily Face Wash products contain glycerin and aloe, both of which condition and moisturize skin. Even with dry skin, you can use this product twice daily.

Scrubs

All of Clearasil's scrub products contain salicylic acid and an exfoliant. The exfoliant works by deeply cleaning the pores while the salicylic acid fights acne. Though Clearasil indicates you can use these products daily, exfoliating can be irritating to your skin, especially if you are sensitive. It can also be drying. If you are using a cleanser containing salicylic acid, you do not need to double up on that ingredient. Some people benefit from using an exfoliant two or three times a week.

Treatment Cream

Clearasil offers a variety of treatment creams for breakouts at different levels of severity. These products contain the most popularly used acne-fighting medications: salicylic acid, resorcinol or benzoyl peroxide. According to Kern, resorcinol will break tough skin down, including blackheads and whiteheads. Benzoyl peroxide, according to the American Academy of Dermatology, kills the bacteria that causes acne.
These products also differ in how they are dispensed. You can buy a pen-like applicator to take with you. Another product is mixed with a tint to help conceal discolored lesions.

Indications

In this crowded market of acne treatment systems, it is difficult to determine what medications are best for your skin. You should keep in mind that you should not mix medications. If you have mild acne, try a product with resorcinol for a week. Move on to a product with salicylic acid if you do not see results. Use benzoyl peroxide for more moderate breakouts. Benzoyl peroxide comes in three formulations. Start with the lowest dose, once daily. As long as it is not too drying on your skin, you can increase your dose or apply the ointment twice daily. Try different combinations of dosing and applications until you find a plan that works for you.

Warnings

Clearasil only manufactures over-the-counter acne medication. They are safe to use without a doctor's prescription. Some people, however, do react adversely to acne medication. Some people have swelling or inflammation while others may feel a burning or stinging sensation. It is not advisable to continue using these products if you have a reaction. Consult with your doctor and talk about getting a prescription for a medication your skin does not reject.
