Ninety percent of teenagers struggle with acne outbreaks. There is no fast cure for this common skin problem, but teens can use many effective products that will wipe it out within a few weeks. These products are available over the counter at most pharmacies and department stores and come in convenient forms, like pads, wipes, creams and lotions. It may take some experimentation, but virtually all teens find relief from pimples by using one of the top acne products.

Benzoyl Peroxide cites benzoyl peroxide as the most popular ingredient for over-the-counter acne products used by teens. It attacks two major acne causes by killing bacteria and drying up excessive oil on the skin. It comes in various forms, like creams, lotions, gels, pads and cleansers. Teen acne sufferers can choose the type that fits best in their daily grooming routine. Available concentrations are 2.5 percent, 5 percent or 10 percent, and stronger versions are available with a prescription. Benzoyl peroxide is safe, but it does cause redness and irritation for some teens. This can be avoided by using smaller amounts and building up to the recommended amount.

Salicylic Acid

Salicylic acid is used for a variety of skin conditions, including acne, warts and psoriasis. The National Institutes of Health explains that it works by unplugging blocked hair follicles, which shrinks pimples. It also cuts down on the redness and swelling typically caused by an acne outbreak. Teens can buy salicylic acid products at most pharmacies and department stores in common forms like lotions, gels and creams. It is a safe acne-fighting ingredient, although it can cause irritation the first few times it is used. This generally eases over time.

Vitamin A Creams

Acne that does not respond well to over-the-counter treatments may need a prescription-strength remedy. Many teens get good results from creams derived from vitamin A, according to the Mayo Clinic. They usually have tretinoin, adapalene or tazarotene as their active ingredient. They make skin cells turn over more quickly and keep hair follicles from getting clogged. These creams can be prescribed by a general practitioner or dermatologist.

Antibiotics can make a powerful weapon for acne-afflicted teens when it is combined with topical treatments. Some doctors prescribe a course of oral antibiotics when traditional products are not providing enough relief, the Mayo Clinic explains. This is most commonly done with benzoyl peroxide because that particular product seems to help prevent the development of antibiotic resistance. The oral medication gives teens an extra way to fight acne-causing bacteria.
