About Teenage Acne Medications
Overview
Acne can often be extremely problematic for teens, as raging hormones influence oil production in the skin. To compound the problem, a wide selection of medicines is available at drug stores, making it difficult to choose the right product. Some over-the-counter medications are better than others, and for those not experiencing good results with these products, prescription-strength medications can offer better solutions.
Benzoyl Peroxide
Benzoyl peroxide is considered a mainstay in acne medicine, according to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD). Available in a host of non-prescription washes, creams and treatments as well as higher dose prescription gels and formulas, benzoyl peroxide kills bacteria that leads to blemishes.
Salicylic Acid
Salicylic acid is a nonprescription ingredient used in many acne products. The acid works to correct abnormal skin shedding, helping keep the pores clear of dead cells and buildup.
Antibiotics
Antibiotics are powerful medicines used to diminish problem-causing bacteria in the body. Oral antibiotics can be taken to treat acne internally. Topical products are absorbed into the skin's layers, killing bacteria externally. Either medicine is available by prescription.
Isotretinoin
Isotretinoin is among the strongest medication for acne. As an oral remedy, the pills are highly effective, used to treat cystic acne and severe conditions that do not respond to other medicines. Severe side effects are possible.
Retinoids
Retinoids are available in topical creams and gels, and are derived for vitamin A. Application helps to increase cell turnover and causes the skin to shed, ridding the pores of bacteria and other pore-clogging agents. Retinods are available by prescription.
