Natural Remedy to Remove Scars

Overview

According to the American Academy of Dermatologists, or AAD, while some scars may improve naturally on their own, usually over six to 18 months, many scars require treatment. A number of pharmaceutical and medical treatments are available for this purpose, but you can also use a natural remedy to remove your scars. However, you should always consult with a dermatologist before using natural remedies to remove your scars.

Identification

The AAD describes a scar as a mark on the skin that is left behind when a wound, cut or burn heals. Initially, a scar usually appears red and thick, and then fades away gradually as the skin heals. The University of Chicago Medical Center notes that scars are usually formed from fibrous tissue, and may be flat, sunken, lumpy or colored.

Causes

The AAD notes that scars can form anywhere on the body, and may result from a number of different factors. A scar forms naturally as the body heals broken skin from a wound, cut, bruise or burn. A skin infection such as measles and chicken pox can cause scars, as can skin conditions such as acne. Surgical incisions, stitches and sutures are other causes of scars.

Features

MedlinePlus reports that scars vary in their composition, noting that the final appearance of a scar will be determined by a number of factors. These factors include a person’s skin type, the wound’s direction and its location on the body. Age and nutritional status are other factors that also affect a scar’s appearance.

Proper Wound Treatment

In his book, “The Doctors Book of Home Remedies II,” author Sid Kirchheimer writes that you can minimize scarring with proper treatment of the wound during the healing process. Clean the wound every day with either hydrogen peroxide or soap and water. This helps to prevent a secondary infection, which can increase permanent scarring. You should also avoid picking at any scabs that may form.

Herbal Remedies

Herbal remedies can be used as a natural treatment to prevent and remove scars. In their book “Herbal Remedies,” Asa Hershoff and Andrea Rotelli write about herbs that can be used for this purpose. They include comfrey, gotu kola and calendula. Comfrey helps to accelerate tissue repair and promotes cell growth, gotu kola helps to reduce scar tissue and improve wound healing and calendula speeds the healing of cell tissues and prevents scarring. Other herbs that can be used include calendula, peppermint and echinacea.
