There have been no scientific studies to prove that one vitamin over another will reduce acne. There have been studies, however, on the impact vitamins have on the overall health of the skin, and studies have shown certain vitamin and mineral deficiencies will actually produce acne as a symptom. Overall, it is agreed that bringing skin to its optimum health, boosting the body's overall immune system and taking supplements to help reduce acne inflammation are beneficial.


Zinc is one of the more widely recognized mineral supplements to have an impact in reducing acne. It is even recommended by the Mayo Clinic as a natural treatment for acne. Zinc helps boost the immune system and it contains anti-inflammatory properties. It's also an antioxidant, and as such, aids the body in fighting free radicals. A deficiency in zinc can produce acne as a symptom of the deficiency.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Fish Oil

Fish oil containing omega-3 fatty acids is most commonly associated with its ability to reduce heart disease. Omega-3 fatty acids are also a great all natural anti-inflammatory. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, the body does not produce omega-3 fatty acids on its own and they must be obtained through diet or supplements. Naturally, omega-3 fatty acids are found in fish such as salmon, tuna, halibut and other seafood. If you aren't eating fish at least twice per week, a supplement containing omega-3 fatty acids could be beneficial at reducing the inflammation of acne.

Vitamin A

Vitamin A is another antioxidant, and its derivatives are widely used in the treatment of acne in the form of retinol and tretinoin. Vitamin A helps to build the protective tissue in the skin and reduce the skin from producing excess oil. It helps reduce oxidative stress to the body caused by free radicals. A deficiency in vitamin A can produce acne as a symptom.

Vitamin B

Vitamin B is actually a group of vitamins that perform various functions within the body to promote healthy skin and overall health. Vitamin B1 enhances your circulation, aiding your skin in receiving nutrients. Vitamins B2, B3 and B6 are essential to healthy skin and will cause acne as a symptom of their deficiency. Vitamin B5 reduces stress, one contributor towards acne.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is one of the most powerful antioxidants. It provides a strong boost to the body's immune system. According to The Vitamins & Nutrition Center, vitamin C is responsible for maintaining at least 300 metabolic functions, including tissue growth and repair.
