According to the American Academy of Dermatology, pimples are the papules or pustules that form as a result of dead skin, excess oil and bacteria, causing a soft plug to form within the follicle or pore. The way in which you get rid of a popped pimple is exactly the same as those pimples left untouched. A combination of self-care measures and medications can often help to improve the appearance of your skin.

Step 1

Wash acne-prone skin twice-daily. The Mayo Clinic recommends using a gentle cleanser and warm water to wash the skin twice a day. Look for cleansers that are fragrance-free and hypoallergenic. Ingredients vary from product to product, but most gentle cleansers have a blend of purified water, glycerin and sodium lauryl sulfate.

Step 2

Use a non-prescription acne cream. Acne creams available in stores can effectively treat pimples when used daily, according to the Mayo Clinic. The American Academy of Dermatology suggests the use of creams containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid, but you may also see an improvement in your skin from active ingredients like sulfur, lactic acid or resorcinol. Not only do they kill bacteria, but can cause exfoliation and drying of excess oil. Use two to three times a day on the pimple itself and acne-prone areas of the skin.

Step 3

Contact a dermatologist for prescription-strength acne creams. If over-the-counter creams fail to provide results, the Mayo Clinic advises the use of prescription acne creams. Used daily, creams containing retinoids or antibiotics encourage exfoliation of dead skin and eradication of bacteria. Both factors can go a long way to preventing a clogging of pores and follicles.

Step 4

Check your moisturizers, sunscreens and makeup. If any of these products are oil-based, avoid using them during the duration of your breakout. You may also consider investing in face products that are non-comedogenic or non-acnegenic, asserts the American Academy of Dermatology. Products containing these labels shouldn't clog the pores, thereby reducing the chances of additional breakouts.

Step 5

Note everything that touches your skin. During a breakout, it's important to take note of what may be causing the pimples. Oily foods can leave excess oil around the mouth while eating, compounding the problem. Hair may cause dead skin or excess oil to become trapped in the pores or follicles. Even tightly-fitted clothing can irritate the follicles and cause sweat, dead skin and oil to form soft plugs along the skin.
