Acne and blackheads are very different, but some of the same factors can cause them to develop on your skin. Both can result from poor cleaning of the skin and can be influenced by oil production and presence on the skin, as well as dead skin cells trapping the oil and other contaminants on the skin. Both skin problems are also easy to see and potentially are embarrassing for those who experience them. Fortunately, there are simple ways to treat these problems.

Wash Your Skin

Acne can be exacerbated by oil, dead skin and other contaminants present on the skin--in some cases, this can be the cause of acne. Washing your skin gently with a mild cleanser and soft cloth can help to eliminate these contaminants and keep your skin clean and dry. In many cases, this can help alleviate your acne problems. While it may not clear away blackheads, cleaning your skin will prevent the worsening of your blackheads and may be able to clear away some of your clogged pores over time.

Salicylic Acid or Benzoyl Peroxide

One of the main active ingredients in many skin cleansers is often either benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. These chemicals are likely found in skin products for individuals with acne and/or blackhead problems, and they are easily found at the store in low concentrations. You can apply these treatments at home to clear away dead skin cells that trap oil close to the skin and break down oil aggravating your skin and clogging your pores. Stronger medications require a prescription, but for many people, simple over-the-counter remedies work.

Exfoliating Scrubs

Exfoliating your skin helps to stimulate the pores, wear away blackheads and clear off dead skin cells from your skin. There are numerous different ways you can do this. Sand is a great exfoliant and can be rubbed gently onto the skin to keep it healthy--be sure not to rub hard and damage your acne. Loofah scrubs are also an option, and some soaps contain exfoliating bubbles or sand that help to clear the surface of your skin. You can use these multiple times each week to keep the skin fresh and eliminate the factors responsible for acne and blackheads.
