What is Sulfur Soap? What is Sulfur Soap? What is Sulfur Soap?

Overview

Sulfur is well known for its pungent odor, but it has many practical uses. Sulfur is used in black gunpowder, matches and insecticide. Sulfur is also used in a variety of skin and hair products -- such as soap, shampoo, lotions and face creams -- used to treat acne and other skin complications.

Uses

Sulfur soap is used to treat a variety of forms of acne and other skin conditions, such as blackheads, whiteheads, clogged pores, dermatitis and blemishes. It can also be used to exfoliate dead skin cells and unclog pores.

Why it Works

Oil and dirt accumulate on the skin to clog pores and cause acne. Sulfur removes dead skin cells that clog pores and helps remove excess oil on the skin. Often, sulfur soap also contains salicylic acid, which prevents pores from clogging and breaks down whiteheads, which are clogged pores that have no opening. It also helps clear up blackheads -- pores that are open and have a dark surface. After pores are unclogged and the dead skin is shed, the soap can penetrate deep into pores and remove dirt, oil and bacteria.

How to Use

Sulfur soap is generally for use on the face or other areas suffering from acne. You use it much like regular soap, wetting your face before massaging the soap into your skin and forming a lather and rinsing.

Ingredients

The ingredients of sulfur soap depend on the particular product and the company producing it. Precipitated or colloidal sulfur may be the active ingredient in the soap. Some soaps may use 2 percent sulfur, while others use up to 10 percent. Salicylic acid is often a key active ingredient in combination with sulfur.

Precautions

Sulfur may cause dry skin and some products have an unpleasant odor, while salicylic acid can cause mild stinging or skin irritation, according to the Mayo Clinic.
