How Does Noxzema Work? How Does Noxzema Work?

Overview

Marketed by the Alberto-Culver corporation, Noxzema is a skincare product line specifically targeted at the treatment and prevention of skin blemishes such as acne. Noxzema's products are divided into two lines: the original product line, aimed at keeping the skin clean, and the Triple Clean product line, aimed at specifically treating and preventing acne breakouts.

Salicylic Acid

Most of Noxzema's Triple Clean products use salicylic acid as an active ingredient. Acne can occur when dead skin cells combine with natural skin oils (sebum) and form clogs in the pores. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, salycilic acid works by correcting problems with skin shedding and helping pores become unplugged.

Triclosan

Another active ingredient found in select Noxzema products is Triclosan. Triclosan is a common antimicrobial agent found in soaps, detergents and skin care products. Triclosan works in Noxzema products to kill Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes), a bacteria believed to contribute to the development of acne. Triclosan is regulated by both the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a pesticide. Although it has been approved for use in products such as Noxzema, as of 2009, research is still being done on its potentially harmful physiological and environmental effects.

Natural Additives

Natural active ingredients can also be found in Noxzema products. These include menthol, camphor and eucalyptus. Menthol is a natural product that can be extracted from mint plants. Menthol activates the skin's cooling receptors, which can help relieve skin irritation. Camphor can be extracted from Asian evergreen trees, and has similar properties to menthol. Camphor provides the same cooling effect as menthol. Eucalyptus is extracted from the Eucalyptus tree and helps reduce redness, and may act as an antiseptic.
