Neutrogena On-the-Spot acne treatment proclaims long-lasting protection with less irritation and shine. Using benzoyl peroxide as its main ingredient, a standard in acne medications, it decreases the amount of pimples and the redness associated with acne. The formula has ingredients designed to keep skin conditioned without drying it out.

Benzoyl Peroxide

With the active ingredient of a 2.5 percent solution of benzoyl peroxide, it will reduce the number of breakouts and the amount of pimples and blemishes associated with each breakout. Benzoyl peroxide is designed to work on both blackheads and whiteheads. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved it in over-the-counter use and it used in acne medications and in some artificial nails products.

Surfactants

Surfactants are those items that allow for easier spreading across a surface. In this instance, it makes the acne cream glide easier over the face. Surfactants in Neutrogena On-the-Spot include polysorbate 20, glyceryl laurate and xanthan gum. Xanthan gum also is a skin conditioner.

Skin Conditioners and Protectants

Skin conditioners slow water loss from the skin and decrease skin flaking and drying out. It makes the skin appear supple. Skin protectants decrease irritation. A skin conditioner in this is cetyl dimethicone while glycerin and caprylic/capric triglyceride are skin protectants.

Preservatives

Citric acid, methylparaben and propylparaben are preservatives added to keep the product from spoiling. These preservatives are typically added to extend the life of the product once it is opened and exposed to air.

Miscellaneous

Other ingredients include purified water, bentonite, disodium EDTA, sodium citrate, magnesium aluminum silicate and emulsifying wax nf. Bentonite is a bulking agent and typically used to increase thickness of a product. The emulsifying wax nf will bind water and oil together to make a cream while the sodium citrate is used to balance the pH of the cream. Magnesium aluminum silicate is an anti-caking agent so that the cream will not cake up and flake. Lastly, the disodium EDTA is used to bind with heavy metals and keep them from being absorbed.
