Acne is an inflammatory condition of the sebaceous glands that causes pimples to erupt on the skin's surface. This normally occurs on the face, but acne can appear on your arms and back as well. There are many choices for acne treatments available from a dermatologist and the drug store, but they may be expensive and harsh to your skin. There are home remedies that work. Consult a health-care practitioner before beginning a new treatment.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil can help alleviate back acne. According to the Mayo Clinic, tea tree oil can be as beneficial as creams containing 5 percent benzoyl peroxide. Apply tea tree oil directly on the affected areas twice daily until acne heals. It is potent and should be diluted with water before application. Discontinue use if your skin becomes irritated.

Cleansing Routine

A daily skin cleansing routine can help reduce back acne immensely. Your skin's contact with clothing, environmental pollutants and sweating contribute to acne and should be washed away frequently. Use a mild cleanser twice daily to get rid of bacteria, dead skin cells, dirt and oil. Rinse with warm water and dry your back with a clean towel.

Exfoliate

Lemons and baking soda are examples of effective home remedies for acne-prone skin. Lemon helps slough away dead skin cells and remove clogged skin pores. Apply lemon juice directly to your back acne lesions and let it dry for 10 minutes. Rinse with cold water and do this twice daily until you see results. Baking soda also removes dead skin cells and unplugs clogged pores. Mix equal parts baking soda and water and mix until you create a paste. Apply to skin and rinse away as you would a normal cleanser. Do this once or twice a week.

Clean Bedding

Blankets, comforters, pillowcases and any other linens you sleep on may negatively affect acne breakouts. If they go for long periods of time without washing, they accumulate dirt, oil and other bacteria, which exacerbates an acne inflammation. Wash your sheets at least once a week to remove these irritants.
