If you suffer from mild acne, finding an effective over-the-counter (OTC) remedy can be a challenge. While OTC remedies are effective for many people, those with sensitive skin or just the occasional breakout may find these products too harsh or drying because of the chemicals they contain. Some home remedies are mild enough for sensitive skin, and may be effective in treating mild to moderate acne breakouts.

Egg Whites

An egg white mask is a natural and simple way to treat your breakouts and firm your skin. Egg whites act as a mild astringent and cleanse your pores, as well as firm your skin. Separate two egg whites into a bowl and whip them until they have a frothy texture. Apply to your skin with clean hands or a cotton ball. Leave the mask on for up to 20 minutes or until it dries. As the mask dries, you will notice your skin becoming very tight. Rinse it off with warm water and repeat as desired.

Honey

Honey is a powerful skin treatment as it provides several benefits. It acts as an antimicrobial, fighting the bacteria that cause acne. It also unclogs pores by clinging to dirt and debris and pulling it away from the skin. The antioxidants in honey preserve the skin's vitality. Finally, the waxy texture of honey leaves the skin smooth and glowing. To try this remedy, use clean hands to spread a thin layer of honey over your entire face. Drape a towel over your shoulders or wear an old shirt as the honey will drip after several minutes due to the heat of your skin. Leave it on for 10 minutes and then rinse. Repeat once daily or as often as desired.

Oatmeal

Excess oil production is one of the leading causes of breakouts. If you have very oily skin in addition to acne, an oatmeal mask is the antidote to your problem. Oatmeal is incredibly dry, and easily absorbs excess oil. To make an oatmeal mask, simply combine regular oatmeal and warm water as though you were going to eat it. This should create a thick paste that can be applied to your face. Use clean hands to spread the oatmeal paste over your skin, and allow it to sit for up to 20 minutes or until dry. Rinse the mask off with warm water and pat your face dry. If this remedy leaves your skin too dry, follow up with an oil-free moisturizer.

Lemon Juice

The strong citric acid in lemon juice makes an effective astringent for acne-prone skin. It unclogs pores and evens out skin cell turnaround time. It also leaves skin glowing and vibrant and is much less drying than the alcohol in regular OTC astringents. Soak some lemon juice in a cotton pad and apply over your entire face. If straight lemon juice stings or is otherwise too strong, dilute it with water. Reapply after each washing.
