Essential oils can benefit acne-prone skin in many ways. Tea tree oil, lavender, Roman chamomile and clary sage can balance skin and help clear breakouts. Essential oils are extracted from plants, flowers and herbs and are highly concentrated.
Use jojoba oil to cleanse skin and lemon juice or apple cider vinegar as a simple astringent. Always moisturize your skin and use a water-based sunscreen.
Do a skin patch test before using essential oils: dab a little on your inner elbow and cover it with a bandage overnight. If you develop a rash or other skin irritation, cleanse the area and discontinue use.

Lavender Essential Oil

Use lavender oil (Lavandula angustifolia) to help heal acne by applying it directly to the skin. For other oils, such as clary sage and Roman chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile), combine 4 oz. of jojoba or sweet almond oil in a dark-colored container and add 15 to 20 drops of each essential oil. Dab the oil onto a cotton ball and sweep it over your skin. Clary sage helps balance oil production and Roman chamomile helps calm sensitive, acne-prone skin.

Tea Tree Oil, Lemon Juice and Apple Cider Vinegar

Avoid alcohol-based astringents and other skincare products; they dry the skin but can prompt a rebound and cause skin to produce more oil. Instead, use tea tree oil (Melaleuca alternifolia). Apply it straight to pimples, or dilute it in distilled water. Fresh lemon slices may also help fight acne, as may apple cider vinegar--both are astringents.

Jojoba Oil

Cleanse skin and remove make up with jojoba oil. It is a plant wax that is similar to the sebum produced naturally by your skin. It can be smoothed over skin and wiped away gently with a clean washcloth, or rinsed off. Jojoba oil is also an excellent carrier oil to use to dilute other essential oils. It has a sun protection factor of around SPF 8.
