Holistic Treatments for Alzheimer's Holistic Treatments for Alzheimer's

According to Alzheimer's Association report (2010) approximately 5.1 million Americans over the age of 65 are currently affected by this fatal disease and the number is expected to grow even larger as the baby boom generation grows older. Tragically, there is no known cure for Alzheimer's Disease (AD). A wide range of measures from taking vitamins, to keeping your blood pressure low, can be taken to delay the advancement of the disease.

Eating Cold-Water Fish

A study published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition in 2002 suggests that patients suffering from AD might benefit from consuming omega-3 fatty acids, which have been shown to have several benefits to the heart and the brain. This could possibly explain why they sometimes delay the progress of the disease. The best way to get omega-3 fatty acids is through eating fatty, cold-water fish like salmon or tuna since these species are naturally rich in fatty acids.

Certain Vitamins

Ever since their discovery, vitamins have been hailed as panacea. While we now know they can only do so much to help in the fights your body faces, a host of studies, like those published in respected journals like Neurology and Alzheimer Disease and Associated Disorders, now show that getting adequate amounts of vitamins A, C and E could actually help slow down the advancement of AD. Most scientists attribute this effect to the roles these antioxidant nutrients have in fighting free radicals.

Normal Blood Pressure

According to a report published in the journal Stroke in 2008, having high blood pressure can increase your risk of getting numerous diseases, including AD. Taking steps to lower your blood pressure could certainly lower your chance of developing AD, but it could also help to slow the course of the disease. It is typical for high blood pressure not to cause any symptoms, and that is why it is important for you to check your blood pressure regularly. Some patients report frequent head aches or pain in the eyes that is related to high blood pressure.

Certain Types of Medications

Although research in this area is new and needs to be investigated further, it seems as though statin drugs used to lower cholesterol and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs could help to slow down AD. The effect caused by these drugs on the body is fairly unknown when it comes to AD, but their power in delaying the disease most likely stems from their ability to lower your initial risk of getting the disease.

Keeping Active

Although performing all of the above listed things might help to delay AD, there really is nothing better than to keep challenging the brain with intellectual tasks and social activities. Doing a daily crossword puzzle and keeping close contact with family can not only help the mind stay younger, but it might have other positive effects on patients as well. With an untreatable illness like AD, a patient's mentality can be a decisive factor, and an active lifestyle is a great way to increase someone's desire to live.

How to Prevent Alzheimers' Disease

There are some things you can do to make AD progress less rapidly but the best thing that you can do is to prevent getting this fatal illness in the first place. The best protection against AD seems to be using your brain for different kind of activities. People with doctoral degrees seem to have least frequent occurrence of AD. Education and work that forces you remember, reason and make decisions on a daily basis seem to be the best protection against AD.
