Acne affects people of all ages. It has nothing to do with your skin's cleanliness or your diet. Holistic remedies for acne take time to work -- on average, four to 12 weeks. Knowing which products and foods to use can help you as much as knowing what may make your acne worse.

Get Your Zinc

Zinc is a mineral that can help your acne. This mineral helps reduce inflammation and plays a role in wound healing, according to both the Mayo Clinic and the National Institutes of Health. Get zinc as part of your lotions, creams or other acne products, as a supplement or by eating zinc-rich foods. High-protein foods such as beef, lamb and pork contain rich amounts of zinc. Fish, dark-meat poultry, peanuts and peanut butter are other rich sources. Start eating legumes, or beans, which also provide substantial amounts of zinc.

Use Water-Based Products

Acne can be triggered by using greasy cosmetics and hair products, according to the National Institutes of Health. A holistic remedy for acne involves purchasing and using water-based formulas, otherwise known as "non-comedogenic." Water will be the first listed ingredient in these products. Water-based products will not clog your skin's pores. Know that even though a product may claim to be "oil free," it may still not prevent breakouts, reports the American Academy of Dermatology. You need to experiment with a variety of products to find the one that works best for you.

Additionally, avoid irritants such as greasy sunscreens or acne concealers, advises the Mayo Clinic.

Use Proper Skin Care Techniques

Gently cleanse your face or other acne-affected area(s) twice daily. Wash your skin once in the morning and again at night. Avoid excessive scrubbing or washing of your acne-affected area(s), as this can irritate your skin. If you sweat heavily during the day, wash your skin after sweating. Perspiration can intensity your acne. This is especially true if you wear a hat or helmet. Do not pop, squeeze or pick at your acne, warns the American Academy of Dermatology.

Don't Touch Your Face

Touching your face can make acne worse. Become aware of what touches your acne. Keeping your hair off your face will help. Make certain your hair is clean. Also, avoid putting your hands on your face. Stop putting items such as phone receivers on your face as well.

Don't wear tight clothing and hats. Both of these can contribute to sweating, skin irritation and dirt accumulation, all factors in making your acne worse.
