Acne is a skin condition that ranges in severity, causing blocked pores and inflamed lesions on areas of the face, upper back and chest. Commonly referred to as pimples, these clusters of pustules often affect teenagers, but may also appear in adult skin. While occasional pimples often clear up on their own, recurrent breakouts and ongoing problems may require treatments or remedies to help clear the skin. Eliminating the conditions that lead to the formation of pimples may help reduce flare-ups.

Retinoids

Topical retinoids may help you eliminate pimples. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, these agents can reduce the obstruction within your skin's follicles. Available in prescription creams, liquids and gels, retinoids help treat inflammatory acne. This group of medications includes adapalene, tazarotene and tretinoin. Common side effects may include temporary redness and peeling.

Antibiotics

Both topical and oral antibiotics may reduce the appearance of pimples. Commonly reserved for individuals with resistant cases of acne, oral antibiotic remedies include the use of tetracycline, erythromycin and azithromycin. Added to creams and gels, these agents provide a topical treatment to areas of breakouts.

Light Therapy

The Mayo Clinic advises that certain types of light therapy target the bacteria responsible for acne inflammation. Blue light therapy exposes your pimples to a low-intensity light source that helps to destroy bacteria, while other forms of light therapy, such as diode laser therapy, treats your acne by destroying sebaceous gland in the middle layer of skin. Some remedies that rely on light therapy also include heat and topical medications. Depending on the type and intensity of light therapy treatments, this remedy may cause redness, crusting and swelling in the treated areas.

Zinc

The University of Maryland Medical Center advises that zinc may help to reduce the effects of acne on your skin. They advise starting with a 30-milligram dose twice each day for the first month, then reducing your intake to a single dose each day. Too much zinc may cause vomiting and anemia. This mineral may also interact with prescription drugs, such as tetracycline.

Diet

The University of California's student health services recommend eliminating foods that contain excessive amounts of iodides and fluorides. These substances often exist in shellfish and kelp, as well as iodized salt and various types of multi-vitamins. Eliminating dietary chemicals that can stress your body, such as caffeine and alcohol, may also help remedy acne.
