Acne occurs when dead skin cells, oil, dirt or other contaminants get trapped in the skin's pores. When the pore becomes plugged, bacteria can develop, which further inflames the pimple. This creates a red, pus-filled lesion that can be both painful and cosmetically unappealing. Fortunately, products in your own home can help to treat pimples, reducing the inflammation and unplugging the pore.

OTC Treatments

A variety of over-the-counter and at-home treatment products are available to reduce the amount of oil and material in your pimple. According to Health911.com, applying a few drops of tea tree oil, a natural antiseptic, can help to reduce inflammation and bacteria. This can be less drying than other topical applications and can be purchased in solutions ranging from 5 to 15 percent.

Other products that contain benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid--two common acne fighters--also may help in treating your pimple. The Doctors Book of Home Remedies cautions against utilizing too many acne medications to treat a pimple, however. Use only one treatment at a time, and apply it to the affected spot as well as the area about 1/2 inch around the pimple in order to prevent future breakouts.

Water

Drinking water helps to reduce the buildup of toxins in the body, which can result in acne flare-ups, according to Acne Talks. Drink six to eight glasses of water a day to encourage toxins to move through your system and keep your skin looking healthier. Also, water can help to dilute the oil your pores naturally secrete, thus preventing future breakouts.

If you do not enjoy plain water, drinking teas also may help to reduce inflammation. Health911.com recommends drinking dandelion, white oak bark, ginseng, valerian or sarsaparilla teas.

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera juice or gel has a number of anti-inflammatory properties, according to Health911.com. Apply aloe vera juice to pimples in the morning and at night to dry up the contents. Aloe vera also can be used as a cleanser to remove dirt and oil from the face. Break off a section from an aloe vera plant and apply the pulp directly to your skin. Gently massage it on the face, then rinse with warm--not hot--water.

According to Health911.com, continued use of aloe vera juice or gel can help to improve the skin's condition and eliminate the occurrence of acne scars.
