Overview

Whether you have an important upcoming event or are just sick of acne and want it gone quickly, it might be difficult to hear that besides washing your skin and applying an acne medication there isn't really anything you can do. There is, however, a lot you can not do. For example, it is recommended to not use harsh facial scrubs or soap as these can irritate the skin and cause more pimples to occur. Frequent touching or handling of the skin, overwashing, scrubbing, and using oil-based products are all things to be avoided because they can make acne worse.

Step 1

Put some warm water on your face. Use a mild facial soap to wash your face in the morning and the evening. Check that the soap is oil-free or non-acnegenic. Wash your face only twice a day unless you get sweaty from exercise, as recommended by the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS), a part of the Department of Health and Human Services' National Institutes of Health. Try to exercise before your regular shower time so you do not need to wash your face a third time.

Step 2

Dry your skin carefully by placing the towel on your face and letting it soak up the water.

Step 3

Spread a topical acne medication onto your skin everywhere that you tend to break out after your skin is completely dry. This should take about five to 15 minutes. Use a cream with benzoyl peroxide because it will prompt your skin to make less oil that could clog your pores, according to NIAMS. Use another product that contains sulfur, salicylic acid or resorcinol to treat whiteheads and blackheads as well. Some people respond best to using one medication while others get better results using several together, according to the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology.

Step 4

Use an oil-free shampoo to clean your hair every day if it is oily, or every other day otherwise. Style your hair so that it doesn't touch your skin so the oils from your hair don't clog the pores in your skin, as advised to the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology.

Step 5

Ask your dermatologist for an antibiotic, such as Dynacin, Minocin, Achromycin V, Adoxa, Doryx or Monodo. People with moderate acne or worse sometimes respond well to oral antibiotics. These medications can reduce inflammation and combat bacteria, according to the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology. Take your oral antibiotics along with using topical medications.
