How to Get Rid of a Huge Pimple
A pimple is a result of dead skin and oil forming a soft plug within the pore. When a plug develops, the walls of the affected follicle begin to bulge, causing inflammation to the skin surrounding the pore. When pus collects within the center of the follicle, forming a white tip on the inflamed pore, you develop what is known as pustule, or pimple. Once a pimple develops, there are things that you can do to get rid of it, even one that is huge.
Wash your skin everyday. Using a gentle cleanser, wash your skin each day. If you're prone to pimples, the experts at the Mayo Clinic recommend twice-daily washing. This can help to remove dead skin and excess oil that may worsen your complexion.
Apply an acne cream directly onto the pimple. Products containing benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, resorcinol or sulfur are ideal, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. These treatments can help to further remove dead skin and excess oil as well as cause some minor peeling, which can promote healing. Apply directly on the pimple and surrounding skin for the best results.
Try a prescription-strength acne cream. Though many prescription acne treatments contain some of the same active ingredients as over-the-counter creams, they are typically in higher concentrations, making them much more effective. Beside benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid and resorcinol, the Mayo Clinic and the FDA state that prescription acne medications also contain dapsone or retinoids, such as adapalene, tretinoin, isotretinoin and tazarotene. Apply directly on the pimple and surrounding skin for the best results.
Talk to your doctor about antibiotics. If you suffer from more moderate to severe acne, you may benefit from a prescription antibiotic, according to the Mayo Clinic. Pimples can also contain bacteria that increase the amount of inflammation within the pore. Antibiotics can kill bacteria, and improve the condition of your skin. They are often used in conjunction with a topical acne cream.
Consider a medical acne procedure. When you suffer from chronic acne, you may need to utilize other methods of acne treatment. Even huge pimples can be chronic in nature. Laser therapy, light therapy, chemical peels and microdermabrasion can all help to improve your complexion, according to the Mayo Clinic. Talk to your dermatologist to determine which procedure is best for you.
