What Vitamins Can Get Rid of Acne?

Certain vitamin supplements are recommended as acne fighters. However, a consistent problem in using many of these is that large dosages are often advised--which can lead to toxicity. Vitamins are classified by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as dietary supplements and can make no claims to treat or cure any specific medical condition, including acne. Please talk to your doctor before taking vitamins to reduce acne or treat other health concerns.

Vitamin A

Vitamin A, helpful for good vision, is one vitamin recommended for acne. However, the University of Michigan Health System indicates that large dosages of vitamin A have been used to get rid of pimples in clinical studies--300,000 and 400,000 IU for women and men, respectively. Problematic is that vitamin A doesn't yield the same long-term benefits as its synthetic prescription derivative, isotretinon, and acne eventually returns. Additionally, vitamin A can be toxic when taken in large amounts. The American Academy of Dermatology states that high dosages can cause blistering and peeling in your skin and advises against using it to treat acne.


The University of Michigan Health System points to a number of clinical trials that suggest that zinc supplements are beneficial for blemished skin. Results don't come quickly--it takes as long as four months to see results. Zinc, traditionally used to heal wounds, is believed to exert the same anti-inflammatory properties on acne blemishes. However, again, problematic is that large dosages of zinc result in toxic side effects, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center, which advises against taking more than 40mg of zinc daily unless you speak with your doctor first. When used for a long time, zinc supplements can cause you to have a copper deficiency. The University of Michigan Health System indicates that between 1 and 2mg of copper is required if you take zinc supplements.

Pantothenic Acid

According to the University of Michigan Health System, one preliminary trial used 2.5g of panthothenic acid, or vitamin B5, four times daily to treat acne. When used in conjunction with a cream containing 20 percent pantothenic acid, moderate acne resolved in a couple of months, while severe acne took longer to clear--up to six months. However, the health system states that 10g of pantothenic acid is a high dosage. Large dosages of pantothenic acid may cause diarrhea.

Vitamin B6

The success of vitamin B6 in reducing hormonal acne associated with the menstrual period is largely anecdotal, with results based on poorly designed studies, according to the UMMC. The University of Michigan Health System indicates that one preliminary report suggests that 50mg of vitamin B6 taken daily is beneficial for PMS-related breakouts. Yet another indicates that vitamin B6 makes hormonal acne even worse. The UMMC states that it's possible that the individual's response to this supplement may play a role in its effectiveness in treating acne.
