Acne can be frustrating, embarrassing and a challenge to treat. While most acne suffers might very well embrace an overnight acne cure, one simply doesn't exist, according to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD). It generally takes four to eight weeks for acne medications to show any definite signs of improvement. While no one specific course of action is right for everyone, certain steps may help prevent and treat pimples, whiteheads and blackheads.

Wash Your Face Regularly

Wash your face once or twice a day with warm water and an alcohol-free cleanser, advises the AAD. Cleanse your skin again if you've been sweating. Keeping your skin clean will keep oil from accumulating and worsening acne. Always rinse your skin well to completely remove any residue from the cleansing product.

Apply Bacteria-Fighting Acne Medications

Apply acne products that contain bacteria-fighting benzoyl peroxide. Bacteria left on the skin can promote acne, according to the AAD. Benzoyl peroxide can diminish the puffy appearance of pimples and generally works well for most people.

Also use salicylic acid. This beta hydroxy acid slows the shedding of the cells inside the follicles and prevents clogging.

Consider Prescription Medications

Prescription medications may help treat moderate to severe acne. Topical retinoids such as tretinoin, brand name Retin-A, may help eliminate acne. A number of oral medications including azithromycin, erythromycin and trimethoprim may also help clear pimples, whiteheads and blackheads.

Use Oil-Free Products

Purchase skin care products like sunscreens, moisturizers and cosmetics that are oil-free, advises the AAD. Look for the labels marked "non-acnegenic," "non-comedogenic" or simply "oil-free." This means they won't clog pores and promote acne.

Combine Acne Products

Combining two acne products that attack acne in different ways may be an effective solution for hard-to-treat acne, according to the Mayo Clinic. For example apply tretinoin at night and use pads containing salicylic acid in the morning.

Keep Your Medications In View

Keep all of your acne medications in plain sight so you remember to use them each day, advises the AAD. Placing them next to your other daily essentials such as toothpaste and deodorant will serve as a reminder to apply them.

Keep Hair Clean and Off Your Face

If your hair is oily, shampooing it every day can help keep oil off your skin and may prevent acne from getting worse, according to the AAD. It may also help to keep your hair combed back or pulled away from your skin. Hair care products such as gels, mouses and hair sprays can clog pores if they manage to get on your skin.

Greasy Foods

Eating greasy foods do not necessarily promote acne but they can leave oil residue on your face (AAD). Make sure you thoroughly clean away oil around your mouth when you finish eating.

Look into Laser Therapy

Laser therapy is a relatively new approach in the fight against acne, according to the National Institutes of Health. One such approach combines an infrared laser with skin cooling to target oil gland production. Another technique involves the use of a chemical that makes the oil gland and follicle sensitive to light.

Keep Your Hands off Acne

Refrain from touching your acne. Squeezing, popping or picking at pimples, blackheads and whitehead may only make your acne worse, notes the AAD.
