Acne blemishes occur for a variety of reasons, such as clogged pores, overactive oil glands and hormones. Acne commonly occurs on the face, chest, neck and back area. Once acne lesions have healed, some people are left with embarrassing acne scars. Some of these scars will fade over time. However, serious scars will require medical treatment. The best way to get rid of acne marks is partnering with a board certified dermatologist to get access to the most effective treatments.

Step 1

Schedule a consultation with a dermatologist. The best way to get rid of acne marks depends on the type of scarring. Find a dermatologist through the American Academy of Dermatology. He will examine the scar site and make a recommendation for the best treatment option.

Step 2

Treat ice pick scars with laser therapies. Ice pick scars are deep pits about 2 mm or less in length. Laser therapies work by removing top layers of skin. This resurfaces the skin and promotes new skin growth. Additional treatments may be required, depending on the severity of scarring. Cost for treatment varies, but is usually $3,000 to $6,000 for each treatment session, as of 2010.

Step 3

Get rid of boxcar scarring with chemical peels. This scarring resembles chicken pox scars. Depending on scar severity, a light, medium or deep peel may be required. A dermatologist will apply an acid solution on the skin to remove imperfections. Multiple sessions are typically required and cost up to $150 for each treatment.

Step 4

Use augmentation to treat rolling acne scars. Rolling acne scars are wide, shallow and have a wave-like appearance. A dermatologist will inject filler, like fat or synthetic materials, to plump up depressions in the skin. The cost for treatment is $500 to $1,500 per session. Multiple treatments are usually required.

Step 5

Request the punch technique, a surgical procedure, from your dermatologist. This procedure is very effective for raised lumpy scars, also known as hypertrophy scars. The dermatologist cuts out the scar and grafts new skin to the area, smoothing out the appearance. Cost is up to $300 per acne scar.
