Acne impacts over 40 million Americans each year, and 85% of American teens will suffer from some form of acne, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Acne is the most common skin disorder, and there is a constant search to find a cure. You know to wash your skin and you've heard of many acne treatment systems, but you may not have heard of some secret ways to get rid of acne.

Toothpaste

The myth is true; you can use toothpaste to treat your acne. There is sulfur in toothpaste, which is one of the oldest remedies for treating acne and which is still found in many acne products today. Some toothpaste types have real mint in them, which also helps to soothe the skin. Readers of Acne.org give it an average four out of five for effectiveness. Some note that it is not for sensitive skin, as sulfur can burn and irritate skin, and you should avoid tartar control and other specialized toothpastes, which can cause further irritation.

Egg White Mask

Four hundred sixty-five readers of Acne.org give this method of treatment an average review score of 4.5 out of 5. Those with the best results used a mixture of egg whites whipped with a little honey until the mixture is stiff. Some add lemon juice to help lighten scarring on their faces. One user applies the skin attached to the inside of the eggshell over tough acne areas of skin for extra help. Apply the mixture as a mask, and leave it on for 30 minutes. The left-over yolk can be used as a moisturizer.

Honey Mask

Three hundred fourteen readers of Acne.org also give this method of treatment an average review score of 4.5 out of 5. The biggest complaint is that honey is sticky and can be messy. Some people also experienced itching. Overall, however, people found their blemishes, redness and swelling reduced. Honey is an antimicrobial, so it also helps to kill the bacteria causing the infection within the acne.

Fasting

A water or juice fast is designed to eliminate toxins from the body. When toxins build up, the body pushes them through the skin to eliminate them, and this can result in acne. Fasting forces the detoxification of your body, and while acne may become worse at the onset of the fast, your skin should be clear by the end of it. Steve Meyerowitz recommends a juice fast for clearing of skin. Continue your daily acne skin regimen while fasting, and always consult a doctor before attempting long fasts greater than three days.
