Secret Tips to Getting Rid of Acne
The best way to deal with problem skin is pretty straightforward: Wash your face every day with a non-irritating cleanser and then spot treat active blemishes as needed. But if acne is an ongoing problem--or even if it's just a once-in-a-while annoyance you'd rather not have to deal with--there are few surprising ways to help clear up your skin and get rid of acne.
Start with Milder Treatments
It may be tempting to reach for ultra-intense prescription acne treatments, but if you don't have a serious acne problem, milder, over-the-counter treatments containing salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide are a better bet.
Your skin can build up a tolerance to prescription-strength acne remedies, Dermatologist Fredric Brandt, M.D., says in "Cosmopolitan" magazine, but that won't happen with milder formulations. If you start with intense therapies and don't really need them, you may be making it harder for your acne to heal in the long run.
Be Sweat Savvy
Your sweat contains bacteria that can clog your pores, so keeping sweat from settling on your skin after a workout or on a hot day is essential to getting rid of acne, says Great Neck, New York Dermatologist Jeannette Graf, M.D., in "Fitness" magazine.
If you're wearing makeup when you sweat, you're even more likely to have breakouts, says Dr. Graf. To stop acne, rinse your face thoroughly before and after workouts, and keep a towel handy to blot sweat if it starts dripping.
Don't Pick at Blemishes
Most people know you shouldn't pick at pimples, but you may not realize the reason. Picking can make your acne stick around for up to two weeks instead of just a few days, according to "Allure" magazine.
Instead of picking, if you need a quick fix, "Allure" recommends using an ice cube to calm inflammation and redness before washing the area with a salicylic acid-based cleanser. Then dab on a cream containing benzoyl peroxide.
Though greasy foods and chocolate don't cause acne, what you eat can affect your skin, according to "Elle" magazine. Minimize the amount of sugar in your diet to reduce acne breakouts, since high sugar diets increase risk of acne inflammation, says naturopathic physician, Alan C. Logan, in "Elle." Dr. Logan says eating seafood, which is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, can also reduce acne and inflammation.
