Anyone who has acne probably is looking for a quick solution to get rid of the embarrassing blemishes. Companies claim their products provide fast solutions, but don't believe the hype. Most treatments take six to eight weeks to improve moderate acne, according to the Mayo Clinic. Not all acne takes that long to heal, but no miracle cure exists. A few tips could put you on the path to clearer skin in a few weeks.

Over-The-Counter Products

There are several key ingredients in over-the-counter acne treatments: benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, alpha hydroxy acids and sulfur. The Mayo Clinic states that benzoyl peroxide probably is the most effective for treating and prevents acne. Start with lower-strength products, and be patient while experimenting. Side effects can include dry, irritated skin.

Topical Prescriptions

If over-the-counter products aren't producing the desired results or your acne is more severe, consult a dermatologist. He can prescribe topical treatments that are stronger than the over-the-counter variety but also dry the skin oils and treat the bacterial infection. Because of the strength of prescription treatments, side effects can include stinging, burning, redness or peeling.

Antibiotics

Sometimes topical treatments aren't enough to fight the bacterial infection within the clogged pores. Dermatologists often prescribe antibiotics to fight the infection. Overuse of antibiotics can result in your body becoming immune to them, so use them sparingly, and always follow the prescription instructions exactly.

Isotretinoin (Accutane)

Accutane is heralded as one of the medications that can almost be described as a cure, and it certainly aids in recovery time. For people with deep cysts and severe acne, dermatologists prescribe Accutane. Treatment requires careful monitoring by your doctor, as severe side effects are possible, including dry eyes, mouth, lips, nose and skin. Some people experience physical ailments as a result of being dehydrated, such as itching, nosebleeds and muscle aches. Depression also is a possible side effect.

Dermatological Procedures

Laser and light therapies can reach deep into the skin without damaging the surface. Other procedures include chemical peels and microdermabrasion, and both can help control acne. In any case, review your options with your dermatologist before committing to any procedure.
