Overview

Acne can plague both teens and adults, and make you uncomfortable and embarrassed. If your acne is mild, you can reduce the number and size of pimples with the right skin care regimen and over-the-counter products. However, you should consult a physician before you begin using any new products, and you should test the products on a small area of skin first to check for any adverse reactions.

Step 1

Wash your face twice a day with an acne-fighting cleanser that contains salicylic acid. The cleanser should contain between 0.5 and 2 percent salicylic acid, and "Allure" recommends Aveeno Clear Complexion Foaming Cleanser, particularly if you have sensitive skin. Wet your face and massage the cleanser into your skin for a full minute before rinsing, allowing the salicylic acid to get into your pores.

Step 2

Dry your face, and then spread a thin layer of benzoyl peroxide cream over the areas where you break out. Dab some extra cream onto existing pimples. The cream should contain between 2.5 and 4 percent benzoyl peroxide, and "Elle" magazine recommends Neutrogena On-the-Spot Acne Treatment.

Step 3

Moisturize your skin with an oil-free moisturizer, like Eucerin Everyday Protection Face Lotion SPF 30, since acne products can dry skin out, says "Allure." Apply the moisturizer only to the dry areas of your face, and skip this step if your skin is excessively oily.

Step 4

Even out any facial redness or uneven skin tones with an oil-free foundation. "Elle" suggests Cover Girl Clean Oil Control Makeup, which works to control skin's oil throughout the day. Dot the foundation on your face, and blend it in with a makeup sponge.

Step 5

Cover up individual blemishes with a stick concealer. "Cosmo" recommends Dermablend Quick Fix Concealer. Choose a shade that matches your skin tone, dab it directly onto your pimple, and blend it in with the tip of your finger. Repeat until your pimple is covered.
