Overview

Deep acne, which is also called cystic acne, is the most severe type of acne, according to the Mayo Clinic. This type of acne occurs when dead skin and oil clog up the hair follicles. A rupture underneath the skin forms, causing deep acne lesions. This type of acne is painful and stressful. Fortunately, several methods of treatment are available, including topical treatments and prescription oral medications, that can get deep acne under control.

Step 1

Apply topical treatments to the skin. Over-the-counter products with benzoyl peroxide, sulfur and salicylic acid are affective for some deep acne. If your skin doesn't respond, make an appointment with a dermatologist to request prescription topical products. Prescription products, such as retinoid, are more powerful than over-the-counter treatments.

Step 2

Use combination acne therapies. Deep acne that doesn't respond to topical treatments alone might need antibiotic therapy, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Antibiotics such as tetracycline, minocycline or doxycycline are usually prescribed. Take the antibiotics as directed to get rid of deep acne.

Step 3

Request corticosteroid injections from your dermatologist. This treatment is effective for treating deep acne cysts. Pain is reduced and the acne clears up sooner.

Step 4

Track when deep occurs to determine if acne is caused by hormones. Women who get deep acne a couple days before a menstrual cycle may benefit from taking oral contraceptives. Request a pill that contains estrogen to fight deep acne. Your dermatologist may recommend that you use topical treatments with oral contraceptives.

Step 5

Ask your doctor about using isotretinoin. This oral medication is very effective for treating cystic acne; however, side effects are serious and include birth defects in pregnant women. You will need to participate in a risk management program called iPLEDGE that was developed by the Food and Drug Administration. Two forms of birth control are needed for women taking this medication.
