The chronic appearance of several pimples at any given time is known as acne. Acne does not discriminate and appears on all skin types and genders. Overproduction of oil in the skin seems to be the number one culprit in this fight for clear skin, leaving bacteria and dead skin cells to help form clogs. Infection of the skin's pores then follows, causing inflammation and sometimes pain. Hormones may play a factor in some acne flare-ups as well, according to "The Doctor's Book of Home Remedies." Women who suffer from acne tend to break out before or during their menstrual cycle, when hormone levels are elevated.

Step 1

Wash your face twice daily with a gentle benzoyl peroxide-based face wash and warm water. According to "The Doctors Book of Home Remedies," benzoyl peroxide destroys bacteria that settles into your pores, eliminating infection. This main ingredient also absorbs trapped oil, alleviating the strain put on your skin and preventing future acne flare-ups.

Step 2

Apply oil-free cosmetics labeled noncomedogenic, suggests KidsHealth. Oil-based cosmetics add oils to your skin, promoting clogged pores and acne flare-ups. Sunscreens also contain harmful oils that could pose hazardous to acne-prone skin. Water-based sunscreens are available at pharmacies, along with noncomedogenic cosmetics.

Step 3

Apply a glycolic acid moisturizer to your face after each washing to prevent dead skin cells from collecting within your pores. According to "The Doctor's Book of Home Remedies," glycolic acid lotions and gels are available over-the-counter in 8 percent strengths for use on acne-prone skin.

Step 4

Wash your hair daily to eliminate oils that could contaminate your skin through contact. Longer hair should be kept away from your face, according to KidsHealth. Oils and bacteria can be transferred to your skin via your hair, increasing acne flare-ups and making them more difficult to manage.

Step 5

Avoid picking or squeezing acne pimples. This drives the blockage further into the skin, causing swelling to increase and worsening infection. According to "The Doctors Book of Home Remedies," picking and squeezing will also make pimples larger, extending healing time.
