Acne begins in our teenage years, and according to the American Academy of Dermatology, it impacts 85 percent of U.S. teens each year. Unfortunately, contrary to what we may have been told, acne does not necessarily stop after the teen years and often persists well into adulthood. There are many contributing causes of acne, including hormone changes, but there are four underlying factors to deal with when finding good ways to get rid of acne: excess oil, clogged pores, bacteria and inflammation.

Daily Washing

Acne treatment begins at home, starting with washing acne-prone skin at least once per day, but no more than twice per day with a mild soap. The Dr. Weil website recommends a glycerin soap for an all-natural approach. Acne can be irritated by soaps that are harsh or leave a film, scrubbers and washcloths. Over washing can irritate acne further. After washing--pat, don't rub--the skin dry with a clean towel.

Over-the-Counter Topical Treatments

The next step in getting rid of acne is to apply a topical treatment onto clean skin every day. Benzoyl peroxide is the most recommended ingredient to look for in an acne topical treatment, given its antibacterial properties. recommends a treatment that contains 2.5 percent benzoyl peroxide. Salicylic acid is another recommended ingredient for acne treatments, as it dries up excess oil. The Mayo Clinic recommends tea tree oil as a natural alternative to benzoyl peroxide.

Prescription Topical Treatments

Prescription strength topical treatments are prescribed as a first step in doctor-assisted treatment. Prescriptions for acne use such main ingredients as benzoyl peroxide, adapalene, azelaic acid, clindamycin, erythromycin, sodium sulfacetamide or tretinoin. The type of acne and skin type you have will help your dermatologist determine which treatment is best for you. Readers of give azelaic acid the best rating for how well it works.

Oral Antibiotics

Oral antibiotics are often prescribed upon initial treatment in conjunction with a prescription topical treatment. The antibiotics fight and kill the bacteria causing the infections within your pores that cause acne.

Doctors will often take a patient off oral antibiotics as soon as improvement is seen to prevent the patient from building up an immunity to it.
