Acne is a skin condition that affects men and women of all ages but is most common in young adults. Approximately 85 percent of U.S. teenagers will get acne. While a myriad of skin treatments, creams, and tonics exist to help clear acne, diet can also play a role in getting and maintaining clearer skin.

Whole Grains

Whole grain breads and pastas are low-glycemic foods. That means they are broken down slowly in the body and help to stabilize insulin levels in the blood. Unlike white breads and pastas, whole grain foods do not cause a spike in blood sugar. This is important because as blood glucose levels spike, so do other hormones that can cause acne. By eating whole-grain breads, rice and pastas, blood glucose and other hormone levels stay constant, which may help to clear acne.

Fish and Nuts

Fish and nuts are loaded with omega-3 fatty acids, which fight inflammation in the body. Fish such as mackerel, salmon and anchovies are among the highest in omega-3s. Nuts like walnuts, almonds and hazelnuts are great sources of omega-3 fatty acids as well.

Fruits

Eating a variety of fruits will help to clear acne. Fruits are high in vitamins A and C, as well as a multitude of antioxidants. These will help maintain blood flow to the skin and increase the rate of cell turnover. As a result, skin is more clear and youthful in appearance. The darker the color of fruit, the more vitamins and antioxidants it contains. Fruits like berries, black grapes and pomegranates are excellent choices.

Vegetables

Like fruits, vegetables contain a variety of vitamins and antioxidants that are important in having clear skin. Again, eating vegetables that are deep green, dark purple or orange will provide you with the most nutritional benefit. Vegetables also contain fiber, which is important in maintaining a level blood sugar and regulating hormonal levels that can cause acne. Vegetables like spinach, broccoli and beets are great choices.
