How to Use Steam to Fight Acne on the Face
Overview
According to "Braun-Falco's Dermatology," steam dilates pores, allowing excess dirt, oil and bacteria to be easily washed away, thereby reducing acne. Ideally, steam will be used two to three times per week as part of your regular acne-fighting regimen. Only a few minutes of time and a few basic household supplies are required for an at-home acne-fighting steam treatment.
Step 1
Fill the pot 3/4 full with water and boil the water. Remove the pot from the stove and place it on a trivet on a counter top or table.
Step 2
Drape a towel over your head and hang your head over the pot with your face a few inches away from the rim of the pot. The towel will direct the steam toward your face. According to "Handbook of Dermatology: A Practical Manual," your face will feel hot and flushed, but should not be uncomfortable. If the heat makes you uncomfortable, immediately take a few steps away from the pot and wait until the water cools a little. Repeat the process after a few minutes to see if the cooler steam is tolerable for you.
Step 3
Remove your face from the pot once the water has ceased steaming.
Step 4
Cleanse your face with facial cleanser immediately following the steam treatment. According to "Cosmetic Dermatology: Principles and Practice," this is the optimal time to cleanse the face because the dirt and oils have been dislodged from the pores and can be easily washed away.
