Acne is a dermatological condition that is most common in teens. However, acne can affect people of any age, including infants. Acne affects approximately 40 to 50 million Americans, reports the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD). While there isn't any quick way to get rid of acne, it is possible to get rid of the blemishes with proper care and a personalized treatment plan.

Your face must be clean if you want to get rid of acne. A dirty face harbors bacteria and increases the likelihood of blocked pores, both of which can cause or worsen acne. According to the AAD, you should wash your face using a gentle cleanser up to twice per day. You should also keep your hair clean.

Avoid Picking

Picking at acne blemishes can make acne worse. It may also lead to scarring or infection. In order to get rid of acne, you must resist the urge to pick at the blemishes or pop the pimples. Additionally, because of the risk of introducing bacteria into the area, you should keep these objects from the blemishes.

Topical Medications

Topical acne treatments, such as benzoyl peroxide-based over-the-counter medications and retinol-based prescription medications, can help to get rid of acne. These products are applied directly to the acne blemishes. Topical medication may cause the skin to dry out and peel, but this is normal. If these symptoms are severe, you should reduce the frequency of use instead of discontinuing use.

Oral Medications

Oral medications are available from your primary care physician or dermatologist. These products, which include antibiotics or oral contraceptives, work from the inside out to help cure and control acne. They are usually used in conjunction with topical medications. Isotretinoin, or Accutane, is a systemic treatment for acne that is taken orally. If your doctor prescribes this medication, participation in an awareness program is necessary because this drug has been linked to serious birth defects, according to the American Academy of Family Physicians.

Cosmetic Procedures

Microdermabrasion, chemical peels, laser therapy and light therapy are cosmetic procedures that may help to cure acne, states the Mayo Clinic. Microdermabrasion and chemical peels are most effective when used with topical acne treatments. Laser therapy and light therapy damage the skin's sebaceous oil glands, which will control acne. If you opt to try these procedures, make sure that the person who performs the procedure is a licensed professional.
