Quick Acne Treatment

Quick Acne Treatment

Overview

Acne is a common skin condition that affects around 17 million Americans, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. There are a wide range of treatments for acne, from over-the-counter products to prescription medications. Over-the-counter remedies are inexpensive, quick and effective in many cases.

Benefits

Quick treatments for acne allow you to clear up your skin before an important meeting or big date. Regular use of acne clearing products should keep your skin in good enough condition that the occasional breakout is easily cleared up with spot application of a leave-on gel or lotion.

Types

The two most common ingredients in over-the-counter acne treatments are benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid. Both of these ingredients are available in face washes, masks, lotions and gels. It is also possible to find makeup, such as foundation, that contains acne-treating ingredients. Look for terms such as skin-clearing or clear skin on the packaging when shopping for cosmetics with acne-fighting ingredients.

Function

Benzoyl peroxide works by killing bacteria on the skin that causes breakouts. Salicylic acid is an exfoliant and reduces dead skin cells and sebum, which block pores and lead to acne. Both of these ingredients are effective for treating skin. Choosing is often a matter of person preference, although some people find that their skin is sensitive to one product and not the other.

Time Frame

Results from benzoyl perozide-containing ingredients are often noticeable overnight. Results from products containing salicylic acid might take a few days. The length of time it takes to clear up your skin depends on a number of factors, including the severity of the acne, how sensitive your skin is to the acne treatment and the reason you experience breakouts.

Warning

Skin can react to both salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide. If you normally have sensitive skin, start using the product every other day. After several days, if you do not experience redness, itching or other signs of irritation, increase the frequency of application until you are using it according to package instructions. Any skin treatment that increases skin sensitivity can make the skin more sensitive to the sun, so wear sunscreen daily while using these products.
