Overview

Acne is an outbreak of blemishes or bumps on the skin caused by excess oil, bacteria or improper shedding of skin cells. Some only have acne once or twice as a teenager, but for others, acne becomes chronic and follows them into adulthood. It is difficult to predict how quickly acne will clear up. Mild cases of acne can clear up in approximately three weeks; however, for severe cases, it can take six to eight weeks to see even subtle improvement. Following these steps can reduce irritation and inflammation, helping your skin to clear up faster.

Step 1

Work with your dermatologist to develop a skincare regimen that is appropriate for your skin type. Some skin conditions become worse because they are not being treated properly. Your dermatologist can also help you to understand your skin type so you can choose the appropriate products. For example, if you have oily skin, you should avoid products that contain high concentrations of oil. If you don't have a dermatologist, ask your family physician to provide you with a referral.

Step 2

Wash your face in the morning before work or school and before bed. Use warm (not hot) water and clean towels to prevent further irritation. Keeping your skin clean and free from oil and dirt can prevent an acne outbreak or help a current outbreak to heal faster.

Step 3

Moisturize your face each time you wash it. Use a moisturizer that is appropriate for your face. Moisturizing your skin doesn't necessarily mean that you need to use a product that contains oil.

Step 4

Add an over-the-counter acne lotion to your skincare regimen during a breakout to neutralize your skin and reduce irritation. There are a variety of products available. Choose one that contains one of the following as the active ingredient: benzoyl peroxide, sulfur, resorcinol, salicylic acid or lactic acid.

Step 5

Regularly clean your hair, clothing and other items that come into contact with your face to prevent further irritation. Wash your hair regularly and try to keep your hair away from your face. Only wear hats or scarves that are clean. You should clean phones before using them to remove any dirt or bacteria that could further irritate your skin.
