Overview

Your skin gets oily when the sebaceous glands produce too much sebum--skin's natural oil-- which can ultimately lead to acne. Factors such as poor diet, hot weather, medications, pregnancy, cosmetics and adolescence are leading factors for oily skin. If your face is shiny and oily a few hours after washing, you have oily skin. Proper face washing can reduce this and can prevent future formations of acne.

Step 1

Tie your hair back or use a head band or clip to keep your bangs from falling on your face while washing.

Step 2

Splash warm water on your face and apply a quarter-size amount of facial cleanser to your fingertips. Gently massage your face with your fingertips for one or two minutes. Using your fingertips will help reduce skin irritation. Using a loofah sponge or washcloth can irritate your face and cause breakouts. Rinse well and pat dry with a clean towel or tissue.

Step 3

Apply a facial toner formulated for oily or acne-prone skin. These types of toners, such as those manufactured by ViDerm and Neutrogena, can help remove acne-causing bacteria and excess skin oils. Apply the toner evenly on your face, using a clean cotton ball. Do not rinse.
