Overview

Cystic acne is the most serious form of acne and involves breakouts that include painful cysts on the surface of the skin. The cysts are filled with pus and can lead to infections. Since cystic acne can lead to infections and scarring, you should speak to a dermatologist about appropriate treatment options. Over-the-counter acne remedies may not cure cystic acne, and more aggressive treatment will likely be required.

Step 1

Wash your face with a mild cleanser. Treat your skin gently while undergoing treatment for cystic acne. Use a non-irritating oil-free cleanser and only apply oil-free makeup and products to the skin. It is important to keep your face clean of dirt and sweat since these substances can lead to cystic acne breakouts. Remember to wash your face before going to bed.

Step 2

Start a course of antibiotics. Antibiotics are often prescribed to individuals with cystic acne as a way to prevent and treat infections. A short course is often recommended since you can build up resistance and the cystic acne can return.

Step 3

Get a prescription for the drug isotretinoin. This medication is sold under the brand name Accutane. You will be closely monitored while taking this medication since severe side effects, like major birth defects in pregnant women and increased cholesterol levels, can occur.

Step 4

Receive a cortisone injection. Cystic acne can cause severe inflammation and redness in the area where you are experiencing the breakout. A cortisone shot given as part of your treatment regimen can reduce this inflammation while the medications take effect.
