Acne is caused when the pores becoming clogged with excess skin oil, bacteria and dead skin cells. When you apply regular makeup over acne, it can cause breakouts to become worse and can clog the pores even more with comedogenic oils. Luckily, there are a few cosmetics made for acne-prone skin that will not exacerbate breakouts.

Oil-Free Foundation

Most foundation makeup contains oils and waxes that can clog the pores and exacerbate acne breakouts. If you are hoping to cover your acne breakouts with a base foundation, it is important to use a foundation formulated without using comedogenic ingredients. These oil-free foundations can be used without causing more acne to erupt. To apply the oil-free foundation, place a dime-sized amount of the foundation onto a foundation sponge, then carefully smooth the foundation over your skin. Cover the entire area with a thin, even layer. Avoid rubbing the foundation into your skin, which can cause irritation.

Salicylic Acid Concealer

There are many types of facial concealers, including concealers designed to cover up under eye circles, and concealer designed to cover acne breakouts. It is important when covering acne with a concealer to use one that is formulated with salicylic acid, which will help treat acne. Avoid concealers formulated for use under the eyes, which usually contain oils and waxes added in to help keep the eye area soft and supple. To apply concealer to acne breakouts, coat the tip of a concealer brush with a salicylic acid concealer and dab it gently onto each breakout. Use the end of the brush to blend the edges into the oil-free foundation.

Oil-Free Facial Powder

Makeup can remain smudge-proof on your skin longer when you apply a light coat of facial powder after using the foundation and concealer. Many facial powders contain comedogenic oils, which are usually added to keep the skin moisturized and hydrated. Unfortunately, these powders can cause the pores to become clogged. When using a facial powder, it is important to use one that is oil-free. Some oil-free facial powders also contain salicylic acid, which will aid in clearing your skin. To apply the facial powder, coat a powder brush with oil-free facial powder and lightly apply it to your skin. Use the brush to dust off any excess powder.
