How to Clear Up Ringworm

How to Clear Up Ringworm

Overview

Ringworm is a contagious fungal infection caused by microrganisms on your skin that create a mold-like fungus. Ringworm appears as a round, circular rash, often scaly and itchy. Ringworm develops on the scalp and skin. Jock-itch and athlete's foot are other forms of ringworm. You can contract ringworm by contact with animals, objects, soil and other people. Ointments and creams can help clear up ringworm.

Step 1

Wash the infected areas with an antibacterial soap. Dry the area with a disposable towel so you do not spread the infection to others.

Step 2

Apply an over-the-counter anti-fungal topical cream to the rash. Choose a cream with an active ingredient such as clotrimazole, miconazole, terbinafine or tolnaftate . Rub it into the affected areas once or twice a day for one to two weeks or until you no longer see the rash.

Step 3

Consult with a physician if the over-the-counter treatment does not clear the rash after four weeks. Your doctor may prescribe a prescription topical ointment, oral medication for both.
