How to Clear Back Acne

How to Clear Back Acne

Overview

Acne has many names, including blemishes, pimples or zits. It can affect nearly any area of the skin, including the back. Blemishes develop on the back due to factors like hormones, dead skin cells, dirt, bacteria and even sweat. The pores of the back are harder to reach when cleansing, so these irritants may be more difficult to remove. Clearing the back of acne is still possible, but it may require persistence.

Step 1

Throw out your loofah or shower sponge. These tools can harbor acne-causing bacteria and only further exacerbate your condition. Use a good old-fashioned washcloth for scrubbing.

Step 2

Apply a generous amount of acne cleanser to a warm, wet washcloth during your bath or shower. Scrub the affected areas of the back. If you have sensitive skin, you do not want to scrub vigorously; but if you have tougher skin, this can help slough off dead skin cells. There is no need to rub so hard that the skin tears or becomes red, but don't be afraid to use the washcloth fibers to exfoliate.

Step 3

Dry off with a clean towel. Take the towel behind your back with a corner in each hand. Rub the towel between your shoulder blades and all down your back. This step will help slough off any residual skin cells that you didn't get in the shower. It can also keep the skin dry, which will help limit the growth of existing bacteria.

Step 4

Rub on an over-the-counter acne treatment containing salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. These agents work to dry up the bacteria that is causing acne. Wait until the treatment dries before putting clothes back on or touching the treated skin to fabric, to prevent staining from treatment ingredients.

Step 5

Apply a thin layer of oil-free lotion to your back if it is dry from all the attention. Avoid any lotions that have perfumes, dyes, alcohol or other irritants. Body lotions or facial lotions that are mild are acceptable choices. Insert this product into your skin care routine several minutes after the application of the acne treatment to allow it to dry.
