How to Clear Acne & Pimples

Acne is most prevalent during the teen years when oil glands first become active. Dr. James W. Brann, a retired obstetrician, reports that up to 85 percent of young adults and adolescents will experience breakouts. According to the Acne Resource Center, 20 percent of adults will also have acne at some point. Fortunately, a proven acne-treatment routine can control breakouts and prevent some pimples from forming. The important thing to keep in mind when treating your skin is that only a consistent routine will help to keep your skin clear.

Step 1

Cleanse your skin every morning. While it has been proven that skin hygiene does not play a large role in the development of acne, in 2008, researchers at the Japan Society of Physiological Anthropology found that using soap and water to cleanse skin can reduce oil production and moisture for up to four hours.

Step 2

Apply benzoyl peroxide to the areas of your skin that typically break out. One myth about benzoyl peroxide is that you only need to apply it to existing pimples. This topical medication works by killing Propionibacterium acnes, the bacteria that cause lesions to form. It also works to prevent acne still growing beneath the surface of your skin.

Step 3

Dab 10 percent alpha hydroxy acid, AHA, to each individual pimple. Daniel Kern, founder of uses AHA whenever he sees a new zit. The combination of benzoyl peroxide and AHA, explains Kern, will stop a pimple in its tracks.

Step 4

Cleanse your skin in the middle of the day and again before you go to sleep. Remove the residue from your morning’s acne routine and all makeup. You can use a fragrance-free soap or a cleanser containing salicylic acid. Salicylic acid is an acne medication used to slough away dead skin cells.

Step 5

Reapply benzoyl peroxide one more time during the day, either midday or before bed. As in Step 2, apply the topical medication to areas you typically see pimples.
